Well ask anyone who has fitted a Soft Start in place of DOL or Star delta.
As you will know fixed speed motor applications usually drive some sort of mechanical system, belts, gearboxes, sprocket and chains etc
Using DOL or even Star Delta can cause mechanical shock, ultimately causing costly failures. The associated cost can be considerable in replacement parts not to mention down time and lost production. Providing a soft start can reduce or even eliminate this.
Inverters, of course can also be considered but at present there is still a good price advantage for soft starts and they are simpler to install and commission. Also, not every application needs variable speed but almost every motor can be fitted with a soft start and give a great result.
